Final Final!

Tomorrow at 8am I will take my Equine final and then pass out. It will be wonderful. HB is over as well! It has taught me teamwork, boldness, faith, compassion, understanding, patience, and perspective. Myriad times there were, that I did not believe things would be ok. My Teacher, Amy White, would give me a hug and say, "Everything's gonna be alright, dude!" and lo and behold it would. Out of the shadows a willing foster would appear and take dogs home. It was amazing how helpful everyone has been. I have never seen so much selfless compassion in my life as I have this last semester. I am blessed to be a part of that.
I am still encouraged to quit by various folks, which is something I have come to silently resent in my passive-aggressive way. In my spare time I then comprise reels of spirited debate inside my mind by which I expound upon the good Homeward Bound does for me and for the world and annihilate my opponent with my deft reasoning and eloquence. It's all very gratifying, I assure you, dear reader.
I bought twelve Five Hour energy shots from the Dollar Tree. They are amazing things. The only thing better would be amphetamines, which I hope I will be able to acquire one day.
Of course, with the HB and the school and the procrastination I do, important things have fallen to the wayside. Things like RUF and running. Maybe one day (the day I acquire those amphetamines) I will be able to do those things too!

Oct 22

I'm still trying to whip my life into some sort of sense so I can start doing more things. No, that doesn't make sense, does it?
Right now I do homeward bound, school, job, dog care, and church. I'm adding in running with the boardtown runners on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and every other Saturday, CVF on Fridays at lunch. Maybe soon RUF will rejoin my repertoire :)

Life has been busy, but I suppose I chose it that way. On Saturday I ran 15 miles with the Boardtowners, did a physical exam on our surgery dog, Easton, helped with Homeward Bounds medical day, and went to a play. On Sunday I went to church and completely overhauled my room. On Monday, I finished cleaning my room and my car and bought a new phone (which I love!). Tuesday I was the surgeon in surgery lab and did my first neuter (whoot!), ran a few fecals, washed surgery instruments and linens, ran with my foster dog, took my cat and my other foster dog to the vet, and pretended to study. Today I got up at 4am and did a tempo with the boardtown runners, went to class all morning, slept through lunch and my 1pm class in the library, arranged the call schedule, paid bills, deposited checks, did Path club stuff, and then came home to study for the therio test tomorrow.
Tomorrow is a full day, plus RUF, and Friday is another test. Saturday is the homeward bound drop off day, prayer walk, and I'm going home for Dad's birthday.
With all of this, it's a wonder that I'm making Bs. I get so mad at myself for doing sub-par, but life is crazy.
I'm so ready for November 17th

August-October

I dropped off the face of the earth there for a bit, but hopefully I have returned to stay! I let go of RUF, CVF, cleaning house, washing clothes, washing dishes, putting sheets on my bed, and cooking food (you'd be surprised how satiating a jar of peanut butter is).

I've learned that I can do little studying for my tests and make Bs and I've learned that things will usually work out so there's no use stressing about it.

I was in the school paper, FRONT PAGE, last Friday. My pups and I, we were cute. I am now the poster child for Homeward Bound. Yeah, front page totally busts the back of the paper snippets about track I garnered years ago.

August 4th- August 10th

Monday
Ran for 19 minutes
Took dogs to dog park
Fussed at the dogs
Nothing came in at work today :(
puppies!
dog park
studying

Tuesday
The dogs. I don't know this morning. I really don't.
Ran for 40 min
Tripps has kennel cough
4 hour TPLOs
4 months!
Last day of work!

Wednesday
Slept in till 12
Ate at Schaherazad's
cleaned house
dog stuff

Thursday
Ran with Annie and was caught up on her life
Met my lil' sibs Alana Owen and Sara Catala Landry. Alana is from MS and Sara is from Puerto Rico. They are both very friendly and fantastic and fabulous individuals that I already am attached to. The big sibs of the class of 2011 spent the day getting to know the class of 2012 by eating lunch with them and playing silly ice breaker games before the coating ceremony. 2012's coat color is navy, not the best functionally but very nice aesthetically.
I came down with a case of laryngitis half way through the day.
Regina has the kennel cough.
I was called in for a conjunctival flap on the same dog we had done last Saturday, except this time we were fixing the right eye. This dog is a mean, bitey shit-zu that has dermatitis, alopecia, eye gunk, ear gunk, and multi-drug resistant kennel cough. We had to do the surgery in the isolation room and we had a heck of a time rolling the Big Bertha microscope back there! But it all went well, for which I am thankful.

Friday
Went home for a doctor's appointment. I won't have to go back for another 6 months, Yay!!
Took Jeremy to meet Kim.
Hit up University Mall
Red high heels
Friday Nite Cookout at the Lewis's!
Nerts
Kristen's back
Frantic cleaning up

Saturday
Angry 2am text messages
Calling around for kennels
Ran with Annie again. Learned that she will be going home in 20 days...which makes me very sad :( :(
Skipped prayer walk to run with Annie, was going to go to City Bagel to join the group for breakfast but Amy White (one of the founders of Homeward Bound) called me and said, "Hey, Joy, would you like to learn how to put in a catheter?" So I learned how to put in a catheter. It was in parvo dog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canine_parvovirus) named Jasmine who was being kept in a vet's house in Columbus. Both her cephalic veins were blown so I had to do it in the left saphenous, which is difficult to do but I made it on the first try! The only other catheter I've ever put in was in the jugular of a horse. Afterwards, Amy and I met Kylee at City Bagel for brunch. Kylee knows everything about anything that's going on with the vet school. I learned a great deal about the politics and problems that are facing our class. It was quite intriguing as I had no idea any of this was lurking beneath the surface.
Went to Jer's apartment and helped clean his room. Then I fell asleep for about four hours.
Watched Metalocalypse

Sunday
Regina to the retching stage of kennel cough
Church
Worship night!

Events of the Last Three Months

After school ended I let my life unravel as it willed and it willed to not blog. But now I will it back into a comprehensible pattern.

Events of the last three months:

I've bought some cool things, like a leather chair from Hudsons (aka Dirt Cheap but it sounds classier to say Hudsons) and some surgeon's caps that are rather pretty.
Had a horse colic on my first week on call. The horse, Blue Chip, had a two-foot section of strangulated small intestine. After a five hour surgery, Dr. Linford had successfully anastomosed and resected his intestines. I've really gotten to know my co-workers here in surgery and I like them both immensely. I've seen many a surgery, which I'm hoping will pay off in the coming semesters. I can't put any pictures of them on my blog, though. Sorry. But here's a picture of me to console you!

Busted my knee on the railroad tracks. Had to get stitches too. Fell on the tracks again last Monday, the 21st. I'm not running there again.

This is from the Tullos-Meints wedding in mid-May. From left to right we have Jeremy's dad Will, Josie Lewis, Evan Lundy, Me (duh), Jeremy, and James Lewis.

Had two foster dogs come to live with me, Mooney and Oscar. Didn't care for Mooney, but Oscar (a gorgeous male yellow lab) was fantastic. I lost him a total of three times but the humane society and my neighbors brought him back.

Christy and her family (namely, the twins Mary Frances and Donny Jr. came to visit Mom and Dad)
This one guy keeps showing up at my apartment...

...but he cooks a mean Hamburger Helper so I don't mind.

July 27th - August 4th

Sunday

Almost stepped on a snake while running (a garter snake)
Church
Lunch with Jeremy's posse at Mugshots
Awkwardly dressed women on Sportscenter, of all places
The most incredible dumpster diving experience EVER! I fished out a pair of Seven jeans (~$200 retail!), pants from Hollister, Nike Shox (~$100), towels to use for dogs, and a entire trash bag full of Frontline, Heartgard, and other pet meds! This girl and I wore the same sizes as well, in shoes and clothes! While I was practically falling into the dumpster looking for things, Jeremy kept watch and told me when a car was coming so that maybe I could pretend not to be dumpster diving and save my dignity. A big storm rolled through just after I gave up on finding any other goodies.
Finished cleaning my room

Monday
Ran for 51 min in my new Nike Shox shoes. It was pretty sweet
Played You Don't Know Jack before work
Hit-by-car pelvic fracture
Spay
Homeward Bound meeting

Helped Jeremy move a bit

Tuesday

Ran for 62 minutes. But in regular shoes

Busy day at work! Bilateral tibial tuberosity transpostion, Femoral head osteotomy, OHE, and right rear limb amputation. Plus a horse with it's left eyeball melting off.

Did some more dumpster diving and dug up some dog blankets

Homeward bound foster swap! It rained, as always, and there was a problem with one of the dogs. My two dogs, Sugar and Trippz are fabulous! I love them already. Wonderfully house trained, sweet, and beautiful. Trippz has had a hard life; he has bilateral neck wounds, has dirt ground into his skin, and is too thin. After a bath and some affection he seemed better. The other dog, Sugar, is aptly named. Sweet, obedient, submissive, and calm. These fosters will work out well.

Trippz

Sugar

Did yet more dumpster scavenging and found a perfectly function TV! I now have two TVs.

Wednesday

Whatever illness Jeremy has is seeping into me as well. My throat is sore and my tonsils are slightly swollen.

My gate is officially broken. I put the dogs outside for 1.5 hours this morning and when I checked on them they gate was open! They were just outside the gate and came running back in, thankfully. I tied the gate tightly shut with a leash.

Cunean tendon resection, Splint bone removal, mucocele excision, OHE, and laparoscopic liver biopsy.

Despite the gate being tied with a leash, Sugar wiggles through an opening too small for her head, let alone her body, and escapes. I lose yet another dog because of faulty patio gates and a lack of crates.

In yet another twist, Kylee found Sugar by the bank and brought her to the vet school. Kylee happens by me in the hallway and starts talking about this yellow lab stray she found. Very quickly, we figure things out.

Because another foster is having "trouble" with her dog Regina, Amy asks if I would trade Sugar for Regina. Tomorrow I will be losing escape artist Sugar for Regina.

Regina

The rest of the day is spent helping Jeremy move.

Thursday
Too much empathy
barking contests

It's intriguing how the vet school clinics are like the high school social scene. Here in surgery, we are one of the cool kids. We're interesting, athletic, ambitious, and used to getting our way. Call us the class president. Primary care is another cool kid, likable, easy-going. Maybe the class clown who is sometimes (often) late. Equine is the school bully and farm animal is the gentle speaking country boy. Lab services is the weird kid who likes poking gross things with sticks. Anesthesia is the class nerd. Radiology is a lazier nerd. We all like to pick at each other, although anesthesia takes the brunt of it.

88 on last anatomy test, I probably got a C or lower on this one :(
94ish on last Physiology test
120/130 on first Neuro test, 91 on second Neuro test

Dr. Bailey might curve the grades of the last Anatomy Exam because he was not the one in charge of it this time. I hope. If G^d wants me to make a 4.0, then He'll work it out. I did all I could in the time I had and that obviously wasn't enough.

Kate Hardin was talking to me about semester III. It sounds like a doozy. She used statements like:
Everyone failed individual tests
I'm pretty much failing X class right now
You can't learn it all, you have to pick and choose what's most important

Ouch! S3 is going to hurt.

I just need a place to put pictures

And liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?

Yes!
Mairzy doats and Dozy Doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?

Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy"

A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you - oo? A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?"
