Monday Feb 2nd

Monday
Brenda the puppy is very, very sick. She was too weak to stand this morning and was having trouble breathing. I think she might die.
Puppy crisis makes me late for class
Brenda dies

She died of parvo, a virus that attacks the lining of the intestines and causes it to slough off. Because they can't absorb any nutrients or much water the puppies die of dehyrdation and shock.
I had been worried about Brenda on Thursday so I separated her from the others at night and I took her into the vet school on Friday. I was told she had a heavy parasite load and to give her some dewormer and she'd be fine. I started all six on Marquis paste. Byson, her brother, was doing poorly too, but I chalked it up to the coccidia as well. Brenda threw up Friday night, but coccidia infestations can mimic parvo so I ignored it.
Amy told me to take them to Dr. Westbrook at Saturday, but I ignored her because they were eating and drinking and playing.
They seemed so much better on Sunday- playing, running around, being adorable.
Brenda had crawled into her crate that night and hadn't wanted to move.
The next morning she was sprawled on the floor of her crate whimpering and there was diarrhea in her bed. She couldn't stand and couldn't seem to breathe well. I called Dr. Westbrook. She met me at my apartment with Brenda limp and panting and crying in a towel in my arms. I put her in Dr. Westbrook's truck with Byson and she just laid stretched out, panting in the back seat.
She died before she reached the clinic.
