We learned about megaesophagus and allergic rhinitis in dogs during CPC this morning. The presentations were excellent!

Dr. Thomas then lectured to us about making a variable technique chart for x-ray machines. The basic rule is height of the highest part to be radiographed in centimeters * 2 + 40 = KVP. So, cm*2 + 40 = KVP. Unless, that is, you're doing a contrast study with iodine. It's best to keep KVP at no more than 80 for that or you'll burn through the iodine. mAs are set at a ratio of 4 for the spine, 2 for the abdomen, and 1 for the thoracic cavity. Imagine mAs as baseballs and KvP as the speed of the baseballs. To punch through the abdomen, you need enough baseballs to get through to the x-ray plate. These baseballs also need to be traveling fast enough to punch through to the plate. Then you have to figure out what works with your machine and so on.

I was technically on the large animal room, but no large animal animal stuff was requested till 4pm, so I helped out all day. A miniature pony with enteroliths did come in for abdominal radiographs though. It was a busy, busy day! All the radiologists were gone, excepting our baby resident, who was absolutely swamped. We spent near 2 hours trying to get good cardiac films on this squeaky Japanese Chin. Two dogs went to MRI, one had a myelogram, and two others went to CT.
