The last week has been suboptimal. I went to Portland, Oregon the last week of August for Doctor's Academy where they try to sell you on Banfield's five pillars of Trust, Mutuality, and blah, blah, blah. I got all the free M&M's I could eat. That was cool. The week I got back everything just seemed to go to hell for me.
The first day back, a cat fluorescent yellow with hepatic lipidosis came in; we euthed. Then, dog came in, had diarrhea in the lobby, and coded right there. Rushed to the back, had passed away before I could even prep for a catheter. Next day, puppy came with a foreign body. Owners okayed surgery. We removed a series of Polly Pocket toys, did a resection and anastomisis, gastrotomy, and enterotomy. My first BIG surgery. He was doing _so good_. He was doing awesome 72 hours post-op, temp normal, eating and drinking. And then he dehisced. Died in a day from septic peritonitis. The whole family came in sobbing; Mom, Dad, and their little girl, with his little body Saturday morning. He was still warm.
My first heat-stroke dog came in. Temp too high to even read. After cooling measures, his temp was 110. We got him stable and I sat with him for a few hours, hoping he would wake up and come back to himself and he would be okay. When he started with the hematomesis and hematochezia, we sent to the specialists. He didn't make, pretty much cooked himself from the inside out.
It has been a weird week
